GALL BLADDER DOCTOR

Your gallbladder can be another organ you probably don't think about much unless something goes wrong with it. Its main function is to store bile, which helps the body break down and digest the fats you eat. It does not produce bile; the liver does, and it enters your small intestine during meals via the common bile duct. The majority of bile travels to the gallbladder as the small intestine performs its function, where it is stored until it is needed again. When you consume fatty foods, your gallbladder secretes bile into your small intestine, where it combines with partially digested food. Gallbladder issues are typically caused by a blockage in your bile ducts, which are the tubes that transport bile from your liver to your gallbladder and small intestine. The most common cause of blockage is gallstones (cholelithiasis), which form when bile substances harden. If a gallstone is blocking your common bile duct (the tube that connects the gallbladder to the small intestine), your doctor may recommend endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). This procedure can immediately diagnose and treat your condition. During ERCP, an endoscope (a long, thin tube containing a tiny camera) is passed down your throat and into your bile ducts. Your doctor may then use additional tubes or tiny tools to remove gallstones from the area. Surgery may be required if your doctor discovers gallstones in your gallbladder during an ERCP. In addition to removing your gallbladder, your doctor may recommend additional treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy if you have gallbladder cancer. Doctors are also learning more about how and when to treat gallstones during pregnancy. While the majority of pregnant women with gallstones do not have gallbladder surgery during pregnancy, having the procedure done is associated with a nearly 60% lower risk of hospital readmission (and gallstones during pregnancy increase the risks of preterm birth and health problems in both mothers and newborn babies).
