Your gallbladder is another one of those organs that you probably don't think about much unless something goes wrong with it. Its primary function is to store bile, which aids the body in breaking down and digesting the fats you consume. It doesn't make bile; the liver does, and it enters your small intestine via the common bile duct during meals. As the small intestine performs its function, the majority of bile travels to the gallbladder, where it is stored until it is needed again. When you eat fatty foods, your gallbladder secretes bile into your small intestine, where it is mixed with partially digested food. Gallbladder problems are typically caused by a blockage in your bile ducts, which are the tubes that transport bile between your liver, gallbladder, and small intestine. Gallstones (cholelithiasis), which form when bile substances harden, are the most common cause of the blockage. If you have a gallstone that is blocking your common bile duct (the tube that connects the gallbladder to the small intestine), your doctor may advise you to undergo endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). This procedure can be used to both diagnose and treat your condition right away. An endoscope (a long, thin tube containing a tiny camera) is passed down your throat and into your bile ducts during ERCP. Your doctor may then remove gallstones from the area with additional tubes or tiny tools. If your doctor discovers gallstones in the gallbladder during an ERCP, surgery may be required. If you have gallbladder cancer, your doctor may recommend additional treatments such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy in addition to removing your gallbladder. Doctors are also learning more about how to treat gallstones during pregnancy and when to do so. According to recent research, while the majority of pregnant women with gallstones do not have gallbladder surgery during pregnancy, having the operation is associated with a nearly 60% lower risk of hospital readmission (and gallstones during pregnancy increase the risks of preterm birth and health problems in both mothers and newborn babies).
